The River Hills Marina is in the heart of River Hills. It was designed and built by Sea Pines of Hilton Head to facilitate boating activities for the families of this recreationally oriented Community. The Marina provides both open and covered mooring slips harboring a fleet of lake appropriate boats: sail boats, bow riders, ski boats, bass boats, pontoon boats, cuddy cabins, cruisers and houseboats. Round-the-clock security is provided. Most boats remain in the water ready for use all year long.
Recently a major picnic pavilion was completed at the Marina. This facility sits above the water's edge capturing a gentle breeze while providing a magnificent view down the cove to the main channel. This facility is large enough to accommodate catered picnics of over two hundred people. The 'Marina Pavilion' is available to all residents of the community for casual picnics and may be reserved at a nominal fee for weddings, reunions, birthdays, and any other excuse for a party.
In addition to the boat docks and the pavilion, the Marina properties also includes a number of small company or key-man offices. The Conference Center offices provide many hard to find amenities: plenty of free parking, full time security, noontime fishing or boating, and sunny decks for quiet contemplation, all of this with ambiance to dream about. The Conference Center offers to its tenants, and to all the residents of River Hills a full line of office services including: copying, faxing, computer scanning, emailing or printing, word processing, postal metering, FedEx and UPS shipping.
The River Hills Marina Club, Inc. continues to follow its by-laws into its twenty second year as an '... entity having the best interest of the community as its primary concern; to maintain, provide and operate the marina area in a way that will promote the best interest of the River Hills Community and the individuals who reside therein.'
As a not-for-profit organization, it is the intent of the Board of Directors to contain the cost of operating the cleanest, safest, most secure harbor for year-round boating enjoyment possible on the lake.
The Marina Club's annual membership meeting in early spring is followed by a free catered fish fry for its members and their families. Inasmuch as the Marina Club is organized as an operating entity, this is their only social function. Complimenting the Marina Club's function is the River Hills Yacht Club, many of whose members maintain boats in the Marina. This is a social organization that promotes a full calendar of holiday activities centered on boating that frequently use the Marina picnic and docking facilities. Their activities have included: Scavenger hunts on the lake, Dock Hops, Kite flying from boats, an annual Christmas season parade of lights, and an Independence Day parade of boats.
Many members of the Marina Club are also active in other boating-related organizations, which in turn are supported by the Marina. The local Squadrons of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) annually host a 'Fun on the Lake' day for the orphans and other underprivileged children of the Charlotte area. Several hundred children are bused to the River Hills Marina where they board boats volunteered and captained by Power Squadron members. They cruise several miles destined for one of a number of corporate or county parks in the coves down the lake. Here the children spend the day swimming, water skiing, and playing games while the Squadron members prepare all you can eat hot dogs, hamburgers and other picnic fare.
The Marina facilities are also used several times a year by the Coast Guard Auxiliary who inspect boats for conformation to South Carolina and Federal boating requirements. Many Marina Club members participate in the annual 'river cleanup,' using their boats to collect debris from the shoreline.
The River Hills Marina Club is a non-profit association where all of the members are River Hills residents. The facility is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors with all proceeds from the operation being returned in the form of improved ambiance, safety, or access. The Marina not only serves its boating members but also provides a quiet relaxing oasis in the heart of this residential subdivision. Many neighbors stroll the boardwalk and cross the bridge at the end of the cove. They pause to chat with neighbors busy casting for bass from boardwalk or bridge. Some sit on the benches gazing at the water, while others watch the children feeding the ducks and pointing out turtles. Meanwhile around the corner in the pavilion, a bride's veil flutters in the breeze as she greets her guests.
There is no doubt in the mind of any member of The River Hills Marina Club, Inc. that theirs is the BEST, the cleanest, the prettiest, the safest, the most secure harbor allowing them the freedom to thoroughly enjoy the boating experience year around.
